


Most Reverend Joseph Robert Crowley

Bishop Crowley was born January 12, 1915, in Fort Wayne to Jerry and Nellie
(Connelly) Crowley. He was ordained a priest in 1953 and has been pastor
of St. Matthew Cathedral since 1969. In 1971, Bishop Crowley was ordained
auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend and Titular Bishop of
Maraguia. Pope Paul II accepted his resignation (required at the age of
seventy-five years) as auxiliary bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend which was
effective on July 15, 1990. The Most Reverend Joseph Robert Crowley, D.D.
passed away on February 4, 2003.

During his years of service in this diocese, Bishop Crowley served as
assistant chancellor, treasurer, editor of Our Sunday Visitor,
superintendent of religious instruction and vicar general of the diocese; he was
a member of the Catholic Charities board of directors, a member of the
presbyteral council and the priests' personnel board. Bishop Crowley
currently serves as a member of the diocesan finance council and the advisory
council of the diocesan newspaper, Today's Catholic.
We are
extremely proud to announce the opening of our new facility to honor Bishop Joseph Robert Crowley for
his years of dedicated service to the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend by naming
the Activity Center after him. The Bishop Crowley Activity Center will
provide the Marian Community with much needed physical facility space (i.e. an
auxiliary gymnasium, two classrooms, a multipurpose room, a small kitchen and a
