Our History

In the Beginning. . . .

The 1962 groundbreaking ceremonies initiated the fulfillment of a long desired goal--the establishment of a second regional Catholic high school in the South Bend-Mishawaka-Elkhart area.  The new Marian High School opened September 4, 1964, after three years of planning and construction.  Most of the funds used to construct the $1.9 million building were contributed at the parish level through the Bishop's School Building Foundation.

The 36 acre site at Dragoon Trail and Logan was donated to the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese in 1962 by the Poor Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration, whose convent, Mount Alverno, is situated directed south of the Marian campus.  Before construction started, the site was annexed by the City of Mishawaka so that the school could be serviced by Mishawaka city utilities.

Priests and brothers of the Salvatorian Order and Sisters of St. Francis were chosen by Bishop Leo Pursley to administer and staff the school.  Reverend Donald Verhagen, S.D.S., was the first principal.

In the first year of operation Marian had an enrollment of 240 freshmen.  Each year one class was added until the regular four-year high school curriculum was reached.  The first senior class graduated from Marian in 1968.

Throughout the years, Marian has held steadfast to the pledge of challenging students to academic excellence, spiritual growth and physical development.  With these goals in mind, Marian has also recognized that its greatest resource is the family.  With a wide variety of individuals and families, the Marian family is vibrant and strong with a real sense of belonging and vision for the future.

Today as in the past, Marian High School is committed to providing a high quality Catholic education to our students.  With our prayers and commitment to accomplishment, Marian will be strengthened as we move into the future.
