The Scholastic Art and Writing Competition is in its 95th year and is sponsored by the Northwest Indiana and Lower Southwest Michigan Region of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. This program offers students throughout the country and the United Kingdom, an opportunity to be recognized for their outstanding artwork. Nearly three thousand students from public and non-public schools in our region enter artwork into the competition in a variety of mediums. Approximately thirty professional judges select outstanding work, awarding Gold Keys, Silver Keys, and Honorable Mentions. It is indeed quite an accomplishment to be recognized in a show of this magnitude. Marian’s art students ranked very well again this year, receiving 22 Gold Keys, 31 Silver Keys and 46 Honorable Mentions. This is a grand total of 99 prestigious Scholastic art awards for Marian students! All Gold Key artwork will be sent to New York to compete nationally. For several years in a row, our students have been selected for NATIONAL awards and had the opportunity to go to Carnegie Hall to receive their Medals.
Special thanks to Fine Arts instructors Mrs. Kitty Gunty and Mrs. Gina Bonewitz for inspiring and encouraging all of the student artists throughout the year! A big thanks also goes to Mrs. Jane Callan who enters the electronic information needed for the competition.
