Junior Civitans
Mrs. Vicki Schwab, Sponsor

2002 - 2003

In September, members took part in the Crop Walk and raised $347.  In October 2002, we received an award from Ronald McDonald House for collecting one million pop tabs! A Blanket Drive was conducted in November, and in December, the Junior Civitans took part in Christmas Gift Lift purchasing gifts for around 175 mentally disabled patients.  Once again, we'll take part in the "Senior" Prom on March 4 for Mardi Gras.  Pep club donated their proceeds from Powder Puff to us for Habitat House.

2001 - 2002

Marian Civitans had been planning a "Senior Prom" since before Christmas.  Finally, the magical evening arrived - March 14, 2002!

Sixty-seven Marian students paired up with 60 local nursing home residents to enjoy the "Senior" Prom held at Mishawaka Downtown Knights of Columbus.  The evening began at 6:30 as each student introduced themselves to their pre-selected date.  After introductions, students escorted their dates to the decorated trellis where a photographer provided by McDonald's awaited the smiling couples.  Once the photographic moment had been snapped, escorts led their dates to their tables.

Simple yet elegant decorations of green and white kept the St. Patrick's Day theme alive.  The beautiful arched trellis decorated with green and white balloons added to the ambiance.   Thanks to the crew for the great decorations!

Each table had been decorated with clear picture frames embellished with green and silver gems which provided the nursing home residents with a souvenir to take home in to sit in a place of importance while anticipating the arrival of their photograph with their date.  Thanks to the crew for the lovely picture frames!

After a general welcome to all, the boogie began!  A student was the tune master as he led the evening with songs spanning many decades.  Big Band sounds, 50's and 60's oldies, pop songs from today and the ever "classic" Chicken dance were heard throughout the hall.

After some toe tapping and polka-ing, guests went to the refreshment tables where three women from the South Bend Senior Civitan Club were ready to serve punch and cookies. Refreshments included a wide assortment of cookies and Shamrock punch.  Thanks to the refreshment coordinator and all those who helped her!

No prom is complete without a king and queen and the title of Queen was awarded to Virginia Miller from Fountainview.  Her date was crowned Junior King.    Richard Corey of Fountainview was crowned King and his date was crowned Junior Queen.

All good things must come to an end and after each resident was safely in the care of a nursing home staff member, the clean up began.  Thanks to the crew for all your work!

Thanks to Jacci Buscoe, activity director at Fountainview for coordinating all the nursing home residents.  The prom was really her "brainchild". She talked to Mrs. McKenna, whose mother is a resident there and asked if anyone would be interested in having a prom.  Thanks, Mrs. McKenna for asking if Civitans would be interested!  From the initial planning process to the final clean up everyone involved has had a great time which we will never forget!

A big thank you to those who helped to fund the prom:  B. Doriot and Associates who provided a cash donation, Martin's Supermarkets for a $25 gift certificate used towards refreshments, the South Bend Civitan Club for a cash donation, Mishawaka Downtown Knights of Columbus for the generous use of their banquet hall, McDonald's Studios for the gracious gift of a photographer and for providing a photo for each nursing home resident and their Marian date, to a private donor who generously paid for the picture frames and to Mary Quiett for contributing towards the Shamrock plants given as door prizes.   Another big thank you to Caitlin Wesaw who wrote numerous letters and made follow-up calls to provide us with these sponsors!

Thanks, too to all those whose names were not mentioned but had a hand in making this memorable evening come together so beautifully!

Types of Service

Any student ninth through twelfth grade may join Junior Civitans.  The requirements are as follows:

        a) Membership dues is $11 which goes to the International and Regional Clubs.

        b) Sign a pledge form stating that the member will perform 10 hours of service per month, keep a log of service hours, and turn it in monthly.  Member may not accept any money for any service that they do.

Students are given opportunities through club-sponsored events to fulfill some of their service hours.  However, students will need to initiate and/or search for service opportunities themselves as well in order to fulfill their pledge.  This also encourages the student to search for opportunities of service rather than simply signing up for a school sponsored activity.

Some of the service that students have been doing this year include teaching CCD classes at their parishes, volunteering in Nursing Homes, hospitals, etc. working for elderly neighbors, raking leaves, doing housework, coaching elementary sports teams, etc.

If a student is also in National Honor Society, then they are required to perform only seven hours per month.

If a student is in Apostolic Works, they are required to perform only seven hours per month for the semester in which they are enrolled in Apostolic Works

If a student is in both NHS and Apostolic Works, they are required to perform five hours of service for the semester in which they are in Apostolic Works and seven hours the remaining months.

The hours that students work for one club cannot be counted again for another club.
