Dual Credit and Advanced Placement Courses

Marian High School is a regional leader in offering dual credit and advanced placement (AP) courses for our students. Marian offers a wide variety of opportunities for students to earn college credit while completing courses. These challenging courses assist students in meeting the state requirements for the Academic Honors Diploma, as well as preparing them for rigorous academic work at colleges and universities.

Dual Credit Program Details

Through a partnership with Ivy Tech Community College, Holy Cross College, and Indiana University, Marian offers a variety of dual credit courses that count as both college and high school credit. This collaboration provides students with a college level course at no additional cost to the student or family. Dual Credit course content is aligned with on-campus offerings. Students taking dual credit classes meet the same academic readiness standards as students taking the college course. High school faculty members teaching a course for dual credit meet the credentialing requirements of the dual credit institution and the licensing requirements of the Indiana Department of Education.

Many dual credit courses at Marian are considered honors courses, and students who accept the challenge of taking these courses at Marian have the potential to earn additional grade point average points. Upon successful completion of the course, this credit can be transferred to other state colleges and universities. More information on course transfers can be found at transferin.net. Many Marian students ultimately qualify for the College Core, allowing them to advance a year or more in their progress toward a Bachelor’s degree. Eligibility for dual credit courses varies by course. Students may need to meet prerequisites in order to enroll in the course. Common examples include:

PSAT or SAT scores
4-semester GPA of at least 2.6
Completion of an online Knowledge Assessment
Completion of a previous dual credit course

Marian administration works behind the scenes to ensure that as many students as possible meet course eligibility requirements. It is possible that some students cannot qualify to be enrolled in certain dual credit courses. Even if a student cannot earn the dual credits, taking these classes helps secure a postsecondary graduation pathway.

Advanced Placement Program Details

Marian High School provides a wide variety of advanced placement courses for its students. Marian faculty members are approved to teach Advanced Placement (AP) courses by the College Board. AP courses provide students the opportunity to earn college credit as determined by the college or university based upon a student’s score on the AP exam given in May of each academic year. While some AP tests are covered by Indiana state funding programs, students are responsible for paying any testing fee not covered by the state.
